About this objectTwo hand-written pages documenting the first meeting of the Commissioners of Markets of Melbourne, which was held at the Police Office on November 8th, 1841. Later meetings were held at the Exchange Hotel in Collins Street. Just over a year later the work of the Commission is taken over by the Market Committee, part of the newly formed Town Council. Only two members of the Commission, Fawkner and Stephens, entered the Council.
The Market Commission was the first body elected under statute in Victoria; the commissioners being elected by landowners with an annual rental of 20 pounds. Three markets were created: produce and meat (Western Market), a separate cattle market, and a hay and corn market.
Present at the meeting were the Police Magistrate Major St. John, James Simpson, George Arden, James Dobson, John Jones Peers, J. P. Fawkner, John Stephen, Dr Farquhar McCrae & George Porter.
The first order of business was to elect the Chairman, James Simpson.
Isaac Selby made photocopies of the document which he included in a talk he gave to the Victorian Historical Society titled, "The Life of Dr John Patterson and The Election of the First Mayor of Melbourne", reproduced in "The Victorian Historical Magazine" (Vol. XXI, No. 4, p.16).
One of the many glass slides purchased from retailers or specifically made for illustrated lectures given by Isaac Selby between c. 1930 and c. 1955 to raise money for the Old Pioneers Memorial Fund.
