Name/TitleSt James Church and School, Melbourne, c. 1838
About this objectPhotograph of a painting by W. F. E. Liardet of the first church to be built in the settlement of Melbourne. The small wooden building was located on Batman's former sheep run and completed in 1837. It acted as a temporary church and schoolroom, although classes were stopped in 1839. That same year the foundation stone was laid for St James Church by Charles La Trobe, on the corner of William and Little Collins streets.
Liardet painted nearly 40 scenes of early Melbourne in 1875, including this one showing the top-hatted teacher returning to the classroom after lunch.
One of the many glass slides purchased from retailers or specifically made for illustrated lectures given by Isaac Selby between c. 1930 and c. 1955 to raise money for the Old Pioneers Memorial Fund.
