About this objectTwo colour images from newspaper items are side by side. On the left is a painting of Batman's house with a cultivated garden on the bank of the Yarra River. Under this image is printed: BATMAN'S FIRST HOUSE / In 1931-1932 the money was subscribed to build a Memorial over the grave of Barak, the last of the Yarra Tribe.
On the right is a painting of an Aboriginal man sitting on a log holding a boomerang and a shield. Underneath this image is printed: "AN AUSTRALIAN NATIVE / [This house stood at the foot of Batman's Hill, facing the Yarra, near to where Batman Bridge, Spencer Street, has been built. Two natives are shown on the banks of the Yarra. Benboo and his "Lubra" lived in a hut at the foot of the garden. He was the brother of Derrimut, and Bun[ ] credits him, and not Derrimut, with giving the warning to the settlers which preserved them from an attack by the Aboriginals.]
One of the many glass slides purchased from retailers or specifically made for illustrated lectures given by Isaac Selby between c. 1930 and c. 1955 to raise money for the Old Pioneers Memorial Fund.
