About this objectA bronze equestrian statue of Marquis of Linlithgow on a granite pedestal. Designed by William Birnie Rhind and unveiled in 1911.

THE / MARQUIS OF LINLITHGOW / P.C., K.T., C.C.M.C., G.C.V.D., / FIRST GOVERNOR GENERAL / OF AUSTRALIA / 1901-02 / GOVERNOR OF VICTORIA / 1889-1895
John Adrian Lewis Hope, the Earl of Hopetoun, arrived in Australia to serve as the governor of Victoria from 1889 to 1895. In 1901 he became Australia's first governor-general but resigned a year later in 1902 when he was made Marquis of Linlithgow. [source: City of Melbourne. Melbourne Collection]
One of the many glass slides purchased from retailers or specifically made for illustrated lectures given by Isaac Selby between c. 1930 and c. 1955 to raise money for the Old Pioneers Memorial Fund.
