Name/TitleCook's Cottage, before removal to Fitzroy Gardens, Melbourne, c. 1930
About this objectA photograph of what was thought to be the boyhood home of James Cook at its original location in the North Yorkshire village of Ayton before it was shipped to Australia. It was built for the parents of James Cook in 1755.
In 1934 the cottage was dismantled and each stone numbered so the building could be accurately reconstructed in its new location. It is now a popular tourist attraction in Fitzroy Gardens, East Melbourne.
One of the many glass slides purchased from retailers or specifically made for illustrated lectures given by Isaac Selby between c. 1930 and c. 1955 to raise money for the Old Pioneers Memorial Fund.
