About this objectA photograph of a tall, thin, sandstone obelisk in the Gothic style mounted on a three stepped ivy-covered plinth. Erected by Samuel Craven in 1871, the memorial was dedicated to the six early pioneers whose remains were buried nearby. The pointed top has since disappeared.
Samuel Craven was a respected stonemason who tendered to build the monument for the sum of £189 10s. (Trove: The Ballarat Star, 22 Dec 1870)
One of the many glass slides purchased from retailers or specifically made for illustrated lectures given by Isaac Selby between c. 1930 and c. 1955 to raise money for the Old Pioneers Memorial Fund.
