About this objectPhotograph taken from the southeast of the monument dedicated to General Charles Gordon of Khartoum. Designed by William Hamo Thornycroft, the over 3m high memorial has the bronze figure of the general in a contemplative stance on a tall square stone plinth. The monument was erected by the people of Victoria in 1887. The buildings along the west side of Spring Street, including the Windsor Hotel, can be seen in the background on the left, and the Treasury Building on the right.
The statue shares the Gordon Reserve park with a memorial to the poet Adam Lindsay Gordon.
One of the many glass slides purchased from retailers or specifically made for illustrated lectures given by Isaac Selby between c. 1930 and c. 1955 to raise money for the Old Pioneers Memorial Fund.
