Name/TitleNotes and newspaper article : George Russell 1812-1888
About this objectIncludes biographical details & part played by pioneer George Russell in Melbourne's early settlement, including formation of Clyde Company.
Notes (anonymously compiled) about George Russell of Golf Hill and his journey from Scotland to Hobart, via the Swan River settlement in WA, in the vessel 'Drummore', (voyage 1830-31).
Russell of Golf Hill (near Shelford, Victoria) was one of the earliest pioneers of the colony having arrived in Port Phillip in 1836 on the schooner "Hettie" with numerous sheep, intent on securing a pastoral run.
The schooner, entering the heads 'got aground between Schnapper point and the Red Bluff- soon becoming a wreck so that the owners of a flock of sheep which were on board had to wade up to their necks in the sea to land them safely, carrying them on their shoulders.'
Author speaks of Russell mostly in the past tense but appears to be writing not long after Russell's passing, probably between 1890-1900. This account closely follows George Russell's own account eventually published as - The Narrative of George Russell - in 1935. "He (Russell) has written a narrative of his life which may some day be published," says the note-writer.
Author holds Russell in high esteem, noting his kindness and hospitality to a wide circle of relatives and friends, especially in the early days. The author commends Russell's work as a magistrate for 40 years.
