The stone, with triangular top with quarter-circular shoulders, takes up the bottom half of the image. A railing, trees and memorials are in the background. Selby writes that this tombstone is "the earliest Catholic memorial that remained down to the time of exhuming". Unfortunately, because the photographer is looking down on the headstone, the inscription is difficult to read; and the reading isn't helped by the faded image. However, the same image in photograph form is clearer. The decorative motif at the top of the stone shows a cross above IHS within a sun symbol, surrounded by the words, GLORIA IN EXCELSIS DEO. Followed by: Memento Mori This Stone is Erected by Mrs. Catherine Carr widow of the late Mr. Michael Carr late of Dublin who departed this life on the 19th of October 1839 Aged 36 Years Also her Brother Mr. Michael Bulger who Departed this Life on the 11th of March 1841 Aged 29 Years Requiescant in pace Selby, in his Memorial History of Melbourne, tells us that, "[Carr] bought land at the first land sale, and was one of our earliest publicans. His burial was the sixth in this [RC] Division of the Cemetery." Carr and Bulger were reinterred in Fawkner Cemetery, Section: Old Pioneers, Grave 388. This image is attributed to Everard Studley Miller who photographed many graves and tombstones in the Old Melbourne Cemetery (established in 1837) in the 1920s as part of a project led by Isaac Selby to record and commemorate all aspects of Melbourne's second cemetery (the first being at Flagstaff Hill). The RHSV holds original glass negatives and albums of the photographs from this project. One of the many glass slides purchased from retailers or specifically made for illustrated lectures given by Isaac Selby between c. 1930 and c. 1955 to raise money for the Old Pioneers Memorial Fund. Behind this tomb, in the middle distance is the "oblong horizontal stone on a stone base" which lies over the remains of five members of the Langhorne and August families. Both monuments sit in a sea of long grass. More tombs and trees are in the background. According to Selby, the table tomb just has "E. B. S. 1845" carved into the top, and the inscription on the flat tomb reads: (82 in Selby's grave index p. 378, OPMHoM) "Elizabeth, wife of William Langhorne, 1841; Henry August, infant son of Alfred & Sarah; Sarah, widow of John S. August of Belize, Honduras, 1844, aged 52; Robert Mastrall, her son, 1845, aged 22 years; Alfred Langhorne, late of Laverton, 1874, 57 years. On the stone is the monogram AM. One cannot tell if it refers to the maker of the tomb or the people buried in it." This monument was relocated to Fawkner Cemetery (Old Pioneers Section, grave 76), and it features on a page of the Altona Laverton Historical Society's website devoted to Alfred and Sarah Langhorne and their homestead. Selby suggested that the deceased were relatives of George Langhorne, who clashed with William Lonsdale over the latter's treatment of Aboriginals. (p.197, OPMHoM) According to newspaper reports, Alfred Langhorne married Sarah, daughter of the late John S. August of Belize, Honduras, on 25th May, 1841. This image is attributed to Everard Studley Miller who photographed many graves and tombstones in the Old Melbourne Cemetery (established in 1837) around 1920 as part of a project led by Isaac Selby to record and commemorate all aspects of Melbourne's second cemetery (the first being at Flagstaff Hill). The RHSV holds original glass negatives and albums of the photographs from this project. One of the many glass slides purchased from retailers or specifically made for illustrated lectures given by Isaac Selby between c. 1930 and c. 1955 to raise money for the Old Pioneers Memorial Fund. Selby numbered this slide #53 or #55. Notes (anonymously compiled) about George Russell of Golf Hill and his journey from Scotland to Hobart, via the Swan River settlement in WA, in the vessel 'Drummore', (voyage 1830-31). Russell of Golf Hill (near Shelford, Victoria) was one of the earliest pioneers of the colony having arrived in Port Phillip in 1836 on the schooner "Hettie" with numerous sheep, intent on securing a pastoral run. The schooner, entering the heads 'got aground between Schnapper point and the Red Bluff- soon becoming a wreck so that the owners of a flock of sheep which were on board had to wade up to their necks in the sea to land them safely, carrying them on their shoulders.' Author speaks of Russell mostly in the past tense but appears to be writing not long after Russell's passing, probably between 1890-1900. This account closely follows George Russell's own account eventually published as - The Narrative of George Russell - in 1935. "He (Russell) has written a narrative of his life which may some day be published," says the note-writer. Author holds Russell in high esteem, noting his kindness and hospitality to a wide circle of relatives and friends, especially in the early days. The author commends Russell's work as a magistrate for 40 years. (Box 062-8) MS 011885 includes an Australian Women's Weekly magazine cutting written by Gladys Hain, 1957, with details of homesteads Golf Hill and Mawallok, Barunah Plains, publication date December 4th, 1957. NOTE: Golf Hill homestead was near Shelford on the Leigh River, 45 kms north-west of Geelong. Now part of Golden Plains Shire. "The current two-storey bluestone mansion exists from 1876." These notes described in ledger as "Geo. Russell Golf Hill".
