The gravestone is a plain white stone with a slightly curved top, which is viewed face-on taking up most of the image. The details of why the memorial was erected are etched in black starting at the very top of the stone. It reads : "This stone was Erected By a few colonists To commemorate the noble act Of the Native Chief Derrimut Who by timely information given October 1835 To the first colonists Messrs Fawkner, Lancey, Evans, Henry Batman And thier [sic] dependents Saved them from massacre, Planned by some of the Up-country tribes of Aborigines. Derrimut closed his mortal career". For some reason the photograph, or maybe the slide maker, has cut off the bottom three lines of text, which reported where Derrimut died (in the Benevolent Asylum), when (May 28th 1864), and age (Aged about 54 years). The grave is surrounded by kerb with a low iron railing. Some shrubs have been planted behind the stone. There is a large monument to the right and behind Derrimut's memorial. One of the many glass slides purchased from retailers or specifically made for illustrated lectures given by Isaac Selby between c. 1930 and c. 1955 to raise money for the Old Pioneers Memorial Fund. He numbered this slide 26. A tripod camera, with a focussing cloth, is positioned right behind the tomb. A large tree with most of its leaves missing dominates the left of the image. More headstones, monuments and trees are in the background. The whole scene is set in a sea of long dry grass. "An iron table, sent out from Stockton on Tees, in England, and placed over the grave by Messrs. Raleigh, Lock & Thorpe - Evans Fawcus, 7th July, 1855, aged 22. It stood under a beautiful elm tree, and was an interesting feature in the Cemetery." (Grave Index 288, p. 391, OPMHoM) According to newspaper articles, the iron tomb was sent by Fawcus' parents [Henry & Ann], of Stockton-on-Tees, England. They requested that his kind friends, Messrs. Raleigh, Locke, and Thorpe place this over the spot, which they have selected for his last resting place. This image is attributed to Everard Studley Miller who photographed many graves and tombstones in the Old Melbourne Cemetery (established in 1837) around 1920 as part of a project led by Isaac Selby to record and commemorate all aspects of Melbourne's second cemetery (the first being at Flagstaff Hill). The RHSV holds original glass negatives and albums of the photographs from this project. The top half of the image is very cloudy as if the photograph was taken on a misty morning. The cemetery is noticeable by its light-coloured tombstones and monuments dotted among the many trees. In the foreground are buildings that line the south side of Franklin Street. The three roofs with skylights could be the Currie & Richards store which was built in 1915. St Mary's Cathedral (St Mary Star of the Sea) can be seen at the left edge of the image. Buildings of West Melbourne that line Peel and Queensbury streets can be seen to the left of the image too. The market is in the mist behind the cemetery. A horse and cart trundles around the corner at Franklin and Queen streets, at the right edge of the image. The stone was leaning to the left, as seen in the original photograph (AL045-0008), but has be straightened here in GS-TM-55. The inscription reads: (67 in Selby's grave index, p. 377, OPMHoM) SACRED (Gothic script) To The Memory of David Dibbs Seaman who was Unfortunately Drowned in the Yarra on the 15th June 1846 Aged 26 Years Erected by his brother Seamen as a token of respect. Selby writes that several people who drowned in the Yarra were buried in the Old Cemetery, "revealing the absence of bridges and good landing places, and the peril in the currents of the Yarra to swimmers." Newspaper reports tell us that Dibbs "fell from the taffrail of the lighter Flinders, on Saturday afternoon." An inquest returned a verdict, "that the deceased was accidently drowned, whilst labouring under the effects of liquor." In 1885 he published 'A treatise on Cattle', and in 1895 'Old Times in the Bush of Australia'. In 1894/5 he published ten articles in the Leader, entitled 'Old Time Reminiscences. A True Record of Early Adventures'. These articles are reproduced in this work. Before retiring to Melbourne in 1900, he led a varied life, occupying Tyntynder station on the Murray River near present-day Swan Hill, with Andrew and Peter Beveridge in 1845; operating a postal service at the Glenelg River Crossing Place (later Casterton) in 1847; operating a store at Casterton with his brother, Edmund, from 1848; in 1854 he renewed his Inn-keeper's license for the 'Glenelg Inn' at Casterton; in 1861 he was at 'The Avenue' station, near Penola, in South Australia. He was inn-keeper of the 'Gate Hotel' near Naracoorte, South Australia, in 1868. From 1875 until 1900 he was sheep farming at 'Hillcroft' near Minyip, in the Wimmera district. In the late 1890s he sought a pension from the State, as one of the pioneers 'who had opened up the natural resources of the colony at the risk of their lives in the early days'. In 1900 the State Cabinet agreed that he should receive 20 shillings a week. He died in September 1904 and was buried in the Kew Cemetery. His reminiscences contain extensive discussion of his interaction with the Watti Watti people of the Swan Hill district.; BookMS 001188 (Box 061-17); S.S. Steamship "Great Britain" & mining and farming pioneer, Hugh Harris; Ross, Stewart; Short history of the 'Great Britain' and family story of Scottish passenger, Hugh Harris and his descendents. After his arrival in Melbourne in 1852, Harris sought his fortune in the gold mines in Beechworth. Later, after marriage, he settled in the nearby town of Stanley but by 1865 he sold his water and mining rights and bought land as a free selector in Corryong. His Corryong property was called "Hunter's Plain". The homestead, built in 1870 on Parish Lane, is typical of vernacular Australian design with its hipped roof and encircling verandahs. Its walls of locally hewn stone are a notable feature. The property has since been classified by the National Trust. Hugh Harris and family were early pioneers to the Upper Murray region. Harris built and managed the first school on his land in Corryong and also provided land and helped build the Presbyterian Church. He lived in the Corryong area until his death in 1913. (Box 061-17) MS 001188 : includes reference to goldfield and mining; free selecting; farming in and around Beechworth; building of schools and churches. People : Miles, R. W., Pearson, J.
