SECONDHAND BOOK
Box Hill, once a picturesque little farming community on the outskirts of Melbourne, has developed into an important residential and commercial suburb. In this book, O.S. Green and Julia Morant combine their talents to tell the story of that development with particular regard to Box Hill as it used to be.
First to settle the area was Arundel Wrighte, in 1840. Then came the gold rush, prompting Richard Trainor to grow wheat for the diggers and build the first hotel. This was the Whitehorse, demolished in 1953 and remembered by the statue of the horse on Whitehorse Road. Later settlers established Box Hill’s reputation as a fruitgrowing area, while others built such magnificent mansions as Banff and Upton House. Effie Ball provided the community with Wattle Park, and Joseph Aspinall not only gave land for the Woodhouse Grove Wesleyan Church but also helped to build it.
The face of Box Hill has changed but the community spirit is as strong as ever. As recently as 1968 the suburb’s Greek community built the beautiful Greek Orthodox Church.
All these and other subjects, including Tait’s corner, the Surrey Dive, Machadodorp, and the Pound House, are described in O.S. Green’s lucid text and illustrated by Julia Morant’s delicate pen and wash drawings. The result is a delightful insight into Box Hill as it stands today and as it was in years gone by.
