Landed Enterprise and Penal Society: A History of Farming and Grazing in New South Wales before 1821 by Brian H. Fletcher (Second Hand Book)

SECOND HAND BOOK

Although the landed industries of early New South Wales played a vital part in the life of the colony they have not received adequate attention from historians. Specialist works dealing with particular branches of primary industry do exist, but what is lacking is a systematic study that examines the whole range of farming and grazing activities… The present book is aimed to fill this gap.

It is based on extensive research in England and Australia and throws fresh light on numerous facets of the economic development of a settlement that was primarily penal in character. Written from the standpoint of the historian, rather than the economist, it explores themes of wide interest. Beginning with an examination of British land policy it goes on to consider the role of government as well as private interests in the field of primary production. There are valuable chapters on the farming activities of officers, migrants and emancipists and an illuminating discussion of the policies of successive governors. Attention is paid not only to major industries such as wheat, cattle and wool, but also to the lesser branches of agriculture. The general student as well as the specialist will find much of value in this thorough and well-balanced study.
