The Picturesque Atlas of Australasia was one of the first best-sellers of Australian publishing – between 1886 and 1888 the three volume book sold an extraordinary 53,000 copies. The book was a mass media event and there had been nothing quite like it before.
But the book was not an atlas as we know it. There were relatively few maps. Instead, it attempted, in words and pictures, to describe the Australia of the time, and today it is a revealing marker of an emerging nation.
