Pioneer Doctor is a biography in story form of John Singleton, who was one of the first doctors to practise in Victoria. The author is admirably qualified for such a task, since she is not only Dr. Singleton’s great-granddaughter but is herself a doctor, practising in very much the same field that he himself covered. Her book traces the whole of Dr. Singleton’s life in Australia from the family’s first landing in Melbourne in February, 1851, to his death, and constitutes a vivid personal record not only of one who was to lay the foundation of the greater part of Melbourne’s social work as we know it to-day, but also of the early life of the city and its people.
