Southern Invasion, Northern Conquest: Story of the Founding of Melbourne by Rex Harcourt (Secondhand Book)

SECONDHAND BOOK

It is the story of how exploration and settlement at Port Phillip paved the way for colonising present-day Victoria. Its cast includes the traditionally-known characters of the Batmans, Fawkner, Gellibrand, the Hentys and Governors Bourke and Arthur, as well as the contributions of lesser-known characters such as Swanston, McKillop, Gardiner and the like. It also portrays the role of ‘Wild Bill’ Buckley in a new perspective.

Except for Buckley and Governor Bourke, all the characters came from Tasmania – ‘The Southern Invaders’.

There is a detailed account of the attempt by the Port Phillip Association to have its agreement with the Aborigines ratified by the British government, who approved the settlement but not the treaties.

Rex Harcourt shows how the Tasmanian adventurers were denied the just rewards for their enterprise, and how the Sydney Treasury and private speculators there, reaped the major benefits from the new settlement – ‘The Northern Conquest’.
