SECONDHAND BOOK
Edited and with an introduction by J.A. La Nauze
No other event is of such significance in Australian history as Federation. This record of the activities of the federal movement during the years between 1880 and 1901 forms a document of great value and intense interest.
Alfred Deakin, statesman and father of Federation, began his narrative in March 1898, in the closing days of the Federal Convention. His account of the final stages of the movement in London was added in 1900, before the inauguration of the Commonwealth. Deakin was throughout the proceedings in the very centre of the events he describes, and herein lies the unique interest of the story to scholar and general reader alike. He was also a skilled journalist, as was apparent in his description of his early years in politics – The Crisis in Victorian Politics, 1879-1881 (Melbourne University Press, 1957). The present narrative, ‘The Inner History of the Federal Cause’ as Deakin called it, is brilliantly composed, and contains many frank and fascinating pen portraits of political figures in Australia and Great Britain at the end of the nineteenth century.
This edition has been prepared from the original manuscript, and as well as correcting some former errors of transcription the editor has included material previously omitted.
