Designed in 1862 by nineteen-year-old architect John James Clark, it is the finest example of Renaissance Revival architecture in Australia. Restored in 1994, the Old Treasury Building is now listed on the Register of the Australian National Estate, Heritage Victoria and the National Trust for its architectural, social and cultural significance. The interior remains largely intact, with original furnishings and few changes to the layout, so visitors can catch a glimpse of the lives of the early bureaucrats, including Prime Ministers, who worked in this important heritage building.
