read more...Today we were delighted to host a delegation from the National Audit Office of the People’s Republic of China who are visiting Australia.
They were intrigued by Richard Broome’s talk on Victoria’s indigenous history and loved the early Victorian legal document which Elisabeth Jackson showed them, from our manuscripts collection, which had some very detailed Chinese calligraphy.

read more...Congratulations to Dr Andrew Lemon AM FRHSV
Andrew Lemon has been honoured, becoming a Member of the Order of Australia for services to community history and the racing industry, in the Queen’s Birthday list of honours.
Andrew Lemon has written sixteen books, four of which have won prizes, in subjects ranging from local history, education, sport and biography, his most recent being The Master Gardener (2018) on L. R Garnett, a principal of Geelong Grammar and a noted garden and environmental writer for The Age.
read more...On 29 May the Heritage Committee of the RHSV made a major submission to the Heritage Council of Victoria regarding planned amendments by the City of Yarra to Design and Development Overlays covering historic strip shopping centres. The RHSV has also been lobbying individual Councillors. We become aware, whilst preparing our submission, that the same approach was being applied not just by the City of Yarra but throughout the inner and middle suburbs of Melbourne.

On behalf of the Council, the RHSV surveyed its member societies, asking their thoughts on the current state of protection for heritage. We received 113 substantial responses. read more...Our FRRR grant is starting to gain traction and we are thrilled to announce that we have appointed Pam Millist to be the project officer working with 4 historical societies in Murrindindi Shire over the next 5-6 months. Pam is a qualified librarian with qualifications in computer science and vast experience working with information technology. She will be starting in the field shortly.
