LIB 00063310; Speak to the earth; Mitchell, Elyne, 1913-2002.; Non fiction work by Australian writer, cattlewoman, and championship skier, on her farming days on Towong Hill Station in the Australian alpine region. She was the daughter of General Sir Harry Chauvel, who commanded the Desert Mounted Corps in World War One. In 1935, at the age of 20, Elyne married Tom Mitchell, moving to his cattle station Towong Hill in the Snowy Mountains. During the Second World War, Elyne Mitchell was part of a group of nationalist writers, who wrote poetry and prose centered on the Australian landscape. Details of Hume and Hovell's discovery and description by William Howitt with particular reference to its extinct crater. Other references to Beveridge's station, Mercer Vale and the township of Beveridge, and later subdivision with purchases by Hector Fraser, R. B. Mills and Samuel J. Baird; description of Duke of Edinburgh's visit in 1867 with festivities held at Fraser's Hill. Mount Fraser was originally named Mount Bland (and the surrounding area Bland's Plains) after William Bland. MS 000849 (Box 222-4); Royal Chelsea Hospital certificate, 5 February 1856,; Royal Chelsea Hospital certificate, dated 5 February 1856, granting an 'Out-pensioner' pension of 6d per diem to 20 year old Henry Gray who was wounded in the Crimean War. The out-pensioners were those who received the pension, but lived in their own homes The certificate (parchment) includes Gray's age, physical description and length of service. Also included is a RHSV Heritage Register entry for Augustus William Gray (born Terang, 2, April 1894), and a letter from A. W. Gray (descendant). Portrait of pastoralist and politician William Ross (1827-1900) William Ross was born in Madras Presidency India in 1827 to Scottish parents. They all arrived in NSW in 1843. Ross became a pastoralist in the Western District of Victoria taking up the property The Gums. He was a member of the Mt Rouse Shire Council on and off from 1866 and also elected as a member of the Legislative Council of Victoria in 1878.
