She was the daughter of General Sir Harry Chauvel, who commanded the Desert Mounted Corps in World War One. In 1935, at the age of 20, Elyne married Tom Mitchell, moving to his cattle station Towong Hill in the Snowy Mountains. During the Second World War, Elyne Mitchell was part of a group of nationalist writers, who wrote poetry and prose centered on the Australian landscape. Portrait of pastoralist and politician William Ross (1827-1900) William Ross was born in Madras Presidency India in 1827 to Scottish parents. They all arrived in NSW in 1843. Ross became a pastoralist in the Western District of Victoria taking up the property The Gums. He was a member of the Mt Rouse Shire Council on and off from 1866 and also elected as a member of the Legislative Council of Victoria in 1878.
