In the foreground on the east side of Gisborne Street are from left: Lutheran Church, School and Manse. Portion of David Syme's house is visible on the extreme right. Behind the Lutheran Church is the Unitarian Church, and behind that and to the right are the buildings of Scotch College. Chalmer's Church dominates the right side of the photo. In the middle distance, the Fitzroy Gardens extend across the photograph. In the far distance Clarendon Terrace and Bishopscourt are discernible. This illustration may have appeared in a newspaper in 1938, the 50-year anniversary of the 1888 Centennial International Exhibition. There is a plan of the Exhibition Building and annexes at the back of Centennial International Exhibition - Melbourne - 1888-9 - Official Record, held in the rare book collection of the RHSV. One of the many glass slides purchased from retailers or specifically made for illustrated lectures given by Isaac Selby between c. 1930 and c. 1955 to raise money for the Old Pioneers Memorial Fund. Selby probably showed this slide during his lecture, 'Melbourne Exhibitions', at the public library on August 10th, 1932. He gave another lecture, 'Great Exhibitions of the World - With a plea for one at the Centenary of Victoria', at Independent Hall, Collins Street, on July 5th, 1949. Scotch College is the oldest continuing secondary school in Victoria. It was established in 1851 by Reverend James Forbes of the Presbyterian Church. The large site, in Hawthorn, was purchased in 1915 and the school moved to this, its third location, in 1926. The chapel is known as the Littlejohn Memorial Chapel, dedicated in 1936 to William Still Littlejohn, who was Principal from 1904 to 1933. Schoolboy spectators and their bicycles are in the foreground of the image. The architect, F. M. White, designed the church constructed in 1857, in the English Gothic style. In the late 1800s, the entrance on Clarendon Street to the left of the image was removed, and the entrance on Dorcas Street to the right of the image became the main point of entry. The very detailed solid drawing of the church contrasts with the lively charmingly drawn congregation gathering for a Sunday service. The second vicar, Canon R.B. Dickinson, was incumbent at St. Luke’s for 51 years, from 1856. Maybe he commissioned the artist to draw his church? The library was built in stages to a design by Joseph Reed, the foundation stone being laid in 1853. The central part of the Swanston Street wing, opened in 1856, is shown in the image, with the Classical portico constructed later, in 1870. Part of the south wing, completed 1859, and part of the north wing, completed 1864, are also seen. The wrought iron gates and enclosing fence were added during the 1870s. Tram lines run along Swanston Street in the foreground. Constructed between 1858 and 1862, the Treasury was the first major government office built after the gold rushes. It was designed in the Renaissance Revival style by J.J. Clark, who was eighteen years old at the time! In 1876, Treasury moved to the State Government Offices nearby, and the Old Treasury building became the office of the governor and the chief secretary. In the foreground on the left is a hansom cab and what looks like a larger four-wheeled cab. On the right of the image two men seem to be having a heated conversation. Neave's Buildings is on the south-east corner and Walter Powell (ironmonger), is situated in the building on the south-west corner of the intersection. Further along on the south side of Collins Street are Gregory's restaurant, Samuel Finley and Co. (drapery importers and silk merchants), and in the distance, just west of Elizabeth Street, are the offices of the Colonial Insurance Company. Clapperton, Findlay and Co. (drapers and warehousemen) have their large premises to the right of the photograph. The roof in the foreground is that of the first Melbourne Town Hall. Cameron (Firm); Photograph of an oil painting, probably by W. Strutt, showing two uniformed men on horseback, galloping from left to right on a country road. This image is very similar in style to another painting, known to be by Strutt, of two members of the Victorian mounted police (See Po-27). Originally, the mounted police were established for the purpose of apprehending bushrangers and runaways and attending to robberies. Gold Fields Police, mounted police who were stationed at gold fields throughout the colony, alternated between gold escort duty and gold fields patrols. In subsequent years the Force was to develop and expand and by 1861 total strength was 1,343 men, of which 439 were mounted troopers.
