Cameron (Firm); This elevated view of the north side of Toorak Road looking east was probably photographed from the tower of St John's Church, which is situated on the south-east corner of Orrong and Toorak roads. Located east of Lansell Road, the red brick building seen just left of the middle of the image is a chapel and presbytery built by the Catholic Church in 1911. In 1922, St Peter's Catholic Church was built on this site. The grey and white steeple, seen on the horizon to the right of the image, belongs to the Presbyterian (Uniting) Church, built in 1876, north of St Georges Road. The houses and mansions occupying the land between the two churches, that is, the land between Lansell Road and St Georges Road, were built on the Toorak House estate after it was subdivided in 1874 and 1900. William Drummond bought at least two allotments facing Toorak Road, and built 'Kildrum' in 1902, a mansion with a coach house and outhouses. An early electric tram can be seen passing in front of St Peter's. The Prahran municipality was one of the first to establish a tram service in 1910. Image most probably reproduced from 'The History of Prahran, from its first settlement to a City' (2nd. ed. 1924) by J. B. Cooper, opposite p140. Cameron (Firm); This etching of the proposed first major building (quadrangle) to be constructed at the University of Melbourne campus, focusses on the south wing with its short tower. Unfortunately, after building the other three wings of the quadrangle, there were no more funds to complete this fourth, south side above the foundations. This image is probably one of the etchings commissioned by the architect, Francis Maloney White, of the building he envisioned. He based his design on contemporary British university buildings which favoured the Tudor Gothic style to denote ties to traditional seats of learning, but with an absence of ecclesiastic features, to indicate modernity and secular ideas. The foundation stone was laid in 1854 by the first Chancellor, Sir Redmond Barry, and the Lieutenant-Governor, Sir Charles Hotham. The design was altered many times during the build. The original design of the south wing tower inspired the clocktower of the Old Arts building opened in 1924. The south wing was finally constructed in 1969. A creek was dammed to create the lake, and gardens of native and exotic plantings and meandering paths were landscaped around the Quadrangle. Also see "A History of the University of Melbourne" by E. Scott (1936) opposite p12. Similar image GS-EM-72. The stage in front of the organ has been set up ready for an orchestra. The Exhibition Building was constructed in 1879-1880, and the organ erected in 1880, for the 1880-1 Melbourne International Exhibition. The image shows the west nave with its wide side aisles on the ground floor and continuous galleries on the first floor. There is a banner that reads "India" to the left of the stage. There are flags "of every nation" draped from the first floor galleries. The organ was made at the Richmond factory of Mr George Fincham, and at the time was considered to be the 20th largest organ in the world. Part of the organ was removed in 1948, the rest in 1965. One of the many glass slides purchased from retailers or specifically made for illustrated lectures given by Isaac Selby between c. 1930 and c. 1955 to raise money for the Old Pioneers Memorial Fund. Selby probably showed this slide during his lecture, 'Melbourne Exhibitions', at the public library on August 10th, 1932. He gave another lecture, 'Great Exhibitions of the World - With a plea for one at the Centenary of Victoria', at Independent Hall, Collins Street, on July 5th, 1949. The photographer is standing in the road on the south side of the intersection, nearly getting themselves knocked down by a passing horse-drawn vehicle, as seen by the horse's head in the bottom-left foreground. Another horse and empty cab has just crossed Swanston Street and heads west. A cyclist waits on the left before venturing forth. A policeman wearing the "on duty" stripes on his lower-left cuff, chats to a man holding a white flag. Before traffic lights were installed in the 1920s it was up to these early traffic police, with their noticeable white helmets, to stop collisions and gridlock at main intersections. Two cable trams cross Elizabeth Street further west. Bourke Street rises in the distance densely lined with buildings on both sides. The Leviathan Clothing Company is seen on the south corner on the left of the image. Its premises were rebuilt in 1913. Part of the signage of the Hotel Metropole can be seen further along the south side. On the north side of Bourke Street is Buckley & Nunn, a drapers and importers, and Robertson & Moffat, drapers and clothiers. Both stores have "sales" on. The clock on the GPO building says ten minutes to ten. The building on the left at No 59 became the offices of the City of Melbourne Bank Ltd after 1872 [source : SLV]. The Bank of New South Wales (No 55) is an intricate dual-level facade Renaissance Revival-style building by Joseph Reed and completed in 1857. This was the head office of the Bank of NSW in Victoria. It is a copy of Jacopo Sanssovina's Biblioteca Marciana in St Mark's Square, Venice. The building was demolished in 1932 owing to structural problems. The facade was preserved and gifted by the bank to the University of Melbourne, where it formed the facade of the old Commerce Building in 1938. In 2004 the facade was incorporated into a new building at the university, known as the Melbourne School of Design within the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning. No 49 shows an ornate-fronted three storey building with many pillars. Businesses occupying the building included the offices of the British and Foreign Marine Insurance Company, the European & Eastern Telegram Agency, and George N. Oakley, a mining agent and Consul for His Hawaiian Majesty. Later meetings were held at the Exchange Hotel in Collins Street. Just over a year later the work of the Commission is taken over by the Market Committee, part of the newly formed Town Council. Only two members of the Commission, Fawkner and Stephens, entered the Council. The Market Commission was the first body elected under statute in Victoria; the commissioners being elected by landowners with an annual rental of 20 pounds. Three markets were created: produce and meat (Western Market), a separate cattle market, and a hay and corn market. Present at the meeting were the Police Magistrate Major St. John, James Simpson, George Arden, James Dobson, John Jones Peers, J. P. Fawkner, John Stephen, Dr Farquhar McCrae & George Porter. The first order of business was to elect the Chairman, James Simpson. Isaac Selby made photocopies of the document which he included in a talk he gave to the Victorian Historical Society titled, "The Life of Dr John Patterson and The Election of the First Mayor of Melbourne", reproduced in "The Victorian Historical Magazine" (Vol. XXI, No. 4, p.16). Cameron (Firm); Glass slide that depicts the railway bridge over St Kilda road and a footpath. A man is driving livestock on the road, and a man and woman are walking along the path. The railway bridge, buildings and cloudy sky are in the background. In 1857 the St Kilda and Brighton Railway Company was authorized to run a line from Brighton to Windsor, and then by a loop across Punt Road and St Kilda Road to St Kilda Station and then on to Flinders Street. The first train on the loop line from St Kilda was on 3 December 1859, and it opened to the public ten days later. This St Kilda-Windsor railway line linked the isolated Windsor to Brighton (Bay Street) section of the Melbourne railway network to the city. The branch line fell into disuse when an alternative route was built between Windsor and Richmond stations and was closed in 1862.
