Architecture in Australia: A History by JM Freeland (Second Hand Book)

SECOND HAND BOOK

Architecture in Australia is the first comprehensive account of the history of Australian Architecture — from the time of the first canvas tents at Sydney Cove in 1788 to the Sydney Opera House, still not completed in the early 1970s.

Beginning with an outline of the social and architectural traditions brought from Europe by the first white settlers, Professor Freeland goes on to describe the conditions that faced early architects and builders and discusses the methods adopted by them to overcome the shortages of suitable materials, tools and tradesmen. As the new colonies became established, as Australian tradition gradually began to emerge; this is followed through all its major phases, with illustrations of many of the more important buildings and a description not only of the buildings and their architects, but also of the shifting social scene against which they were raised.

Illustrated with over 230 photographs, Architecture in Australia also provides a guide to further reading and a glossary of architectural terms used in the text.
