Colonel Tom’s Boys: Being the Regimental History of the 1st and 2nd Victorian Contingents in the Boer War by Robin Droogleever

This history focuses on the raising, equipping, dispatch and subsequent service of the 514 young colonials who served in the first two Victorian contingents, which were sent in response to Britain’s request for aid when the South African or Anglo-Boer War broke out in October 1899. The first two Victorian contingents became an active part of the main army of Lord Roberts and were engaged in all the confrontations with the enemy (referred to as Boers), during the epic march to Pretoria, the Transvaal capital, and then all the way east to the border with Portuguese East Africa where the Boers dispersed and shortly afterwards began a hit and run style of guerrilla warfare which lasted for the remainder of the war.
