(1 customer review)

This book is an account of four significant and formative years spent in Portland, Victoria by Mary MacKillip between 1862 and 1866 – before she took holy orders and established the Australian Sisters of Saint Joseph.

In Portland, Mary gained her first experience of formal teaching and established her first school; the Catholic ‘Bay View House, Portland, Establishement for Young Ladies’, She was also confronted by great challenges and adversity during her Portland years.

Mary made momentous decisions about her future whilst in Portland – decisions that saw her lead an extraordinary life and become Australia’s first saint.

Book Reviews 1 review for Mary MacKillop’s Portland Years, 1862-1866. By Bernard Wallace

  1. Rev Allan Ansell

There is not a great deal known about St Mary of the Cross’ four years in Portland. This booklet contributes very little to the limited body of knowledge. The author is repetitive. Entire paragraphs are repeated three or more times. There is a lot of ‘padding’ eg a longish snap shot of Portland as it was in Mary’s time during which Mary is not mentioned. Even so, there is such a paucity of historical work on Mary and Portland that it is probably worth buying for the MacKillop completist.
