Description
‘Noorilim – from wool to wine’ is a biography of a pastoral property in the Murchison area, as well a social history of early settlement, through to the present day. It documents the fate of the Native People on and off the Goulburn Aboriginal Protectorate and relations between Europeans and Native People. First settled by Frederick Manton in 1840 as a pastoral run; general devoted to pastoral pursuits, it also served as a thoroughbred stud, cattle stud, sheep stud and finally became vineyards. Among the 23 owners (whose biographies are all given) are Joseph Raleigh, Hugh Glass and William Irving Winter M.L.C. who commissioned James Gall to build a magnificent two storey Italianate mansion replete with Minton tiles and Ferguson & Urie glass. Other owners include Norman Falkiner, Maurice Angliss, and Bryan and Loel Thomson who painstakingly restored the mansion and opened it to the public. The book is lavishly illustrated with historic and contemporary photographs, maps and plans; and is meticulously researched with detailed footnotes.
