Sunday Schools: A Brief History by Keith Hallett

It is widely contended that Christian Sunday Schools played an important part in the development of society since the late eighteenth century and just the force of numbers attending, certainly in Australia, supports this argument. Originally, a movement that sought to bring literacy to children and adults of the working-class, it changed over time to focus more on the middle-class. Regrettably, the lack of much specific historical discourse underplays its influence and that of the churches that sponsored it.

Accordingly, this study of Sunday Schools is a useful and worthwhile contribution to Australia church history. A difficulty in the field is the limited primary sources but Keith Hallett has collected and used the first hand recollections of past Sunday School scholars to enrich his analysis. These reminiscences will undoubtedly bring personal memories flooding back to many readers.
