The Reminiscences of Albert Alexander Cochrance Le Souëf, 1828-1902 by Dr Ian D. Clark

Albert Alexander Cochrane Le Souëf (b. 17/4/1828, Sandgate, Kent, ENG – d. 7/5/1902, Melbourne);married Caroline Cotton (1834-1915) on 9 August 1853 in St Kilda (The Argus 10/8/1853); they had nine children (4 daughters and 5 sons); educated Moravian Mission School, Neuwied, Germany, and privately.

Albert arrived in Melbourne on 30 September 1840, aged 12, with his mother and brother Dudley. In November 1841, he joined his father, William Le Souëf, at the Goulburn Protectorate Station. He often travelled to Melbourne with the station’s bullock dray and delivered his father’s official correspondence to La Trobe and Robinson. After his father’s dismissal in 1843, Albert became an overseer in 1847 at George Curlewis’ and Robert Campbell’s ‘Reedy Creek’ station encompassing lakes Reedy, Boga, and Bael Bael. The Geelong Advertiser and Intellligencer (3/9/1853) listed AAC Le Souëf in a list of new magistrates appointed in Victoria. In 1853 he married Caroline Cotton of ‘Doogallook’, and in 1854 became part-owner of ‘Tallygaroopna’ on the Goulburn River; Usher ofthe Black Rod in the Legislative Council of Victoria 1863-96; in November 1867 attended the Royal levee held in the Exhibition building in Melbourne for the Duke of Edinburgh; member of the Aborigines Protection Board from 1875 until his death, and served as Vice-Chairman for part of that tenure; Secretary of the Acclimatisation Society; Secretary of the Zoological Gardens, Melbourne, 1870-1882, and Director of the Zoological Gardens, Melbourne, 1882-1902.

This publication collates his published and unpublished reminiscences of his experiences in colonial Victoria, including his essays on the Taungurung Aboriginal people.
