The drawing shows a semi-naked Aboriginal man on his knees, leaning back on his hands. An oversized mug with the words, "A New Policy", is held to man's tipped back face by a hand with the word, "Australia". Under the caption is printed, "Public opinion in Australia demands a settled, dignified and sympathetic solution of the neglected problem of the blacks." A few weeks later British aviators John Alcock and Arthur Brown made the first non-stop trans-Atlantic flight in June 1919. This photograph shows Hawker and Mackenzie Grieve at a "Transatlantic Aviators’’ Dinner in London. Hawker is third from the left and Mackenzie Grieve is fifth from the left. Sir John Alcock is at the extreme left, with Sir Arthur Whitten Brown between him and Hawker. Of their 18 children, 12 married and had families. Associated surnames of that generation are Mooney, Smith, Pratt, Wilson, Maynard, Stewart, Horrid, Brownie, Jackson, Bernard, Mason, and Smyth. The autobiography begins on September 15th 1848 and goes until 1854. Tapner recounts leaving England on the "Lysander" for Port Phillip (arriving 11 January 1849), ship strikes, going to Geelong, ship fires, the St Peter's Church, returning to England for a short time and then coming back to Port Phillip (through Port Adelaide), celebrations surrounding the opening of the second Princes Bridge, travel to Kangaroo Ground, the Black Thursday fires, the beggining of the gold rush, the vigilante burning of Bently's Hotel, and the Eureka Riots. The original is held in PR T-0001; DocumentP-851; James Wilson Reid, brother-in-law of Dr. Robert L. McAdam, c. 1853-1903; Oval studio portrait of James Wilson Reid, Jessie McAdam's eldest brother. According to a piece published in The Ballarat Star, June 1886, James was the accountant at the Bank of Victoria, Ballarat, for a number of years, and was presented with "an address and gold watch and chain", when he left to go to Melbourne. He was greatly admired, as was his father, William Reid, who was described as "one of the earliest, most enterprising, and energetic pioneers of Ballarat." In a affidavit which was read during the "Mercantile Bank Case" of 1893, Reid describes himself as a sharebroker, located at 333 Collins Street, Melbourne. Reid did not marry. He died on Christmas Day, 1903, aged 50, at his brother-in-law's house, Stormont, St Kilda, and left his estate to his sisters.; Photograph; Images collection
