Designed by William Wardell in the Gothic style. It was built in stages between 1858 and 1940, consecrated in in 1897, and the spires were not added until the 1930s. The northern view from Cathedral Place toward the western entrance side of the building. In the background to the right hand side of the building is St Patrick's College which was demolished in January 1971. The Castlemaine Market originally contained 22 shops for the sale of local fresh foods and products. It was one of three market buildings arranged geometrically around an arcaded water tank built over the town well in Market Square. The two earliest red brick market buildings, known as East and West Markets, were erected in 1858 to the design of Edmund Spencer, the town surveyor. In 1861/2 an imposing North Market, the present Classical Revival building, was designed by the town surveyor, William Beynon Downe. [source : Victorian Heritage database] VHR no. The plough was later mounted on a commorative plague. The plough consists of a mouldboard and share. The iron work was made by John Wilkie of Uddingston, Scotland, and Henty added the beam of Australian hardwood. (Source: History House, Glenelg Shire). It was built for the parents of James Cook in 1755. In 1934 the cottage was dismantled and each stone numbered so the building could be accurately reconstructed in its new location. It is now a popular tourist attraction in Fitzroy Gardens, East Melbourne. Designed by William Hamo Thornycroft, the over 3m high memorial has the bronze figure of the general in a contemplative stance on a tall square stone plinth. The monument was erected by the people of Victoria in 1887. The buildings along the west side of Spring Street, including the Windsor Hotel, can be seen in the background on the left, and the Treasury Building on the right. The statue shares the Gordon Reserve park with a memorial to the poet Adam Lindsay Gordon. This image is attributed to Everard Studley Miller who photographed many graves and tombstones in the Old Melbourne Cemetery (established in 1837) around 1920 as part of a project led by Isaac Selby to record and commemorate all aspects of Melbourne's second cemetery (the first being at Flagstaff Hill). His balloon was filled with hydrogen and he took with him a cat, a dog, a pigeon in a cage, a bottle of wine and a cold chicken. His flight lasted for two hours and fifteen minutes. Lunardi and all the livestock survived the flight. Provides first-hand oral history of early Swan Hill district circa 1840 until 1894 by James Kirby was a sheep farmer at "Hillcroft" near Minyip in the Wimmera. Describes Tyntyndyer Station and the Beveridge Brothers for whom Kirby worked, details events leading up to and following the murder of Andrew Beveridge, relates detail of Aboriginal contact with white settlers, Aboriginal culture and tribal life, plus anecdotes about settlers in Swan Hill district. Mentions bush ranger Morgan and gold miners, and includes some bush yarns. The book was written at the expressed wish of his Excellency the Governor, Lord Hopetoun.
