"John Alsop, one of the pioneers of the Victorian State Savings Bank. Mr. Alsop was born in Derbyshire, England, 86 years ago, and came to Australia with his parents in 1849. ' He lived for five years in Adelaide, and then came to Melbourne, where he entered the service, of the State Savings Bank. For more than 50 years he remained in the bank, and filled many important positions. He rose to the position of actuary and trustee manager, and he held this position at the time of his retirement, 21 years ago." The winning horse "F.J.A." is about to cross the finishing line at Flemington Racecourse, with Sweet Nell in second position. The winning jockey was Arthur Richardson and the horse owner, Sir Rupert Clark. There were only five starters in the race. This wooden rectangular timber Victorian Carpenter Gothic on Tyers Street was built in 1856 to a design by J. H. W. Pettit and George Hastings. It was reputedly the first church in Gippsland and is a rare surviving example of drop slab construction, with the building being constructed without the use of nails.
