In the foreground is a section of the garden enclosed by a wire fence. The church was designed by Webb and Taylor and built in 1856-7 by E.J. Young. Because of its proximity the Government House services at Christ Church were attended by the Governor and his staff. Between 1881 and 1889 aisles, a tower and sanctuary designed by Reed, Henderson and Stuart were added together with stained-glass by E.R. Suffling of London. St Francis Church was designed by Samuel Jackson and built between 1841 and 1845 with the foundation stone being laid on 4 October 1841, the first mass in the completed nave being held on 22 May 1842 and the completed church blessed on 23 October 1845. No building in image. This may be because the background of the photo is very faded. The Government House Gardens adjoin the Melbourne Botanic Gardens. At the time this photo was taken the Government House Gardens were three times their present size, ie more than 30 hectares. They are thought by the Victorian Heritage Register to be "the most intact 19th century mansion garden remaining in Melbourne". Church has stuccoed walls and turrets on either side of main entrance. Brick fence with iron palings. Brick buildings to either side of the church in photo have since been demolished. The first Welsh-language church service in the colony was held on 15 December 1852, and a chapel was first built on this land in La Trobe Street in 1857. The site was donated by the crown, for the construction of a Welsh Calvinist Methodist Church. The church was rebuilt in 1870 by architects Crouch and Wilson, and is now more than 150 years old. Initially all services were in Welsh, but English-language services were later introduced. Services are still held in Welsh twice a month, as well as in English. Stranded on Lonsdale Reef, 8th April 1902. ; Bulcock, W.; A description of the short-lived voyage and the damage sustained as a result of being stranded on Lonsdale Reef, near Queenscliff on 8th April, 1902 not long after leaving the Australasian United Steam Navigation Company Limited wharf. Includes reports from the surveyor, Alexander McGowan; disbursements; manifest of cargo - contributory value of each interest; list of deposits; apportionment of general average; and a summary of balances due to claimants and consignees and final balance. General Average is a principle of maritime law that essentially establishes that all sea cargo stakeholders (owner, shipper, etc.) evenly share any damage or losses that may occur as a result of voluntary sacrifice of part of the vessel or cargo to save the whole in an emergency. George Hughes was born in 1836, County Armagh, Northern Ireland to parents, William Hughes and Mary Gryson. About the middle of September 1854, aboard the 'Cheviot', he sailed from Greenock, Scotland to Melbourne. Mr Hughes ventured to the country diggings of Victoria before travelling to New Zealand between 1861 - 1871. He also worked as a gardener. He was a local of the Port Campbell region. Edwin Morris was born in London in 1833 to James Morris and Mary Jane Jefferies He travelled to Victoria via Tasmania aboard the ‘Sir Charles Napier’ and resided in Camperdown and Port Campbell until his death in 1920. In 1917, Mr Morris filled out a Pioneer Register for the Historical Society of Victoria providing us with details of his family including one of his poems and noted things he could remember. He married Catherine McVean in 1859 in Port Fairy and they had five children. A number of people in the street looking at the burnt out buildings, where the chimneys were left standing. Walhalla was almost totally destroyed by fire on the night of the 24th November 1888. The fire is believed to have originated in one of the back rooms of the Crawford's drapery establishment. Buildings and businesses destroyed included Messes. Harris and Buchanan's general store, Cowl's chemist's shop, Fielchenfield's drapery establishment, Middleton's tailor's shop, the Long Tunnel Hotel, the Walhalla Chronicle newspaper and printing office, Jolly's tobacconist's and stationery premises, Mainland's jeweller's shop, the Mechanic's Institute,'the Bank of Victoria and the Bank of Australasia, Dunn's grocery store, Trick's mining office, the Empire Hotel, the Catholic chapel, Jolly's butcher's shop, Fleming's hair dressing premises and some private houses. The shire hall and the post office were damaged, but saved. This aircraft entered service with Pan American in 1945. On 17 March 1947 "Clipper Kit Carson" arrived in Sydney from San Francisco to inaugurate Pan American's first service to Australia. The aircraft was sold to Japan Airlines in 1958, then bought by Ansett-ANA in 1965, and appeared on the Australia register as VH-INM. It was converted to an ATL-98A Carvair freighter aircraft in 1968 and was sold by Ansett-ANA in 1974. It was used by several overseas operators and as of 2005 was located in South Africa. The report details the historic and architectural importance of the building, conservation analysis and comparative study. Alcaston House is one Melbourne's first mixed-use Art Deco buildings, designed by A. and K. Henderson and erected by T Donald and Co. in 1929-30. It is an important early twentieth-century example of combined offices and flats, for no other building of the era provided a similar mixed use commercial and multi-storey residential accommodation.
