The site where Her Majesty's Theatre now stands was first purchased in a government land sale by George Porter in February 1839. The address is now at 199-227 Exhibition Street and 84-98 Little Bourke Street. Her Majesty's Theatre was originally designed in 1886 by noted Melbourne architect Nahum Barnet. The theatre was the national flagship of American entrepreneur James C Williamson for nearly 40 years. In 1929 the interior was gutted by fire. Renovations in 1934 were designed by architects C N Hollinshead and Albion Walkley, leading Australian theatre specialists. Ltd.; Photocopy. The Carlton Refuge was established in 1854 with the aim of reforming prostitutes through a combination of prayer and hard work, which usually meant laundry work. As some prostitutes were also mothers, the care of single mothers became a way of fulfilling its primary goal. By 1860 its role had changed to accepting young unmarried women on their discharge from hospital and by 1880 the major part of the Refuge’s work was with those women. Declining demand and alternative means of care brought about its closure in 1949. [source : Australian Women's Register] The first such institution in colonial Victoria, was Melbourne’s Carlton Refuge. Its original site was on Madeline (now Swanston) Street but in 1890 the institution moved to Keppell Street, Carlton, where it would operate until its closure in 1949. The house was located at 180 Clarendon St, East Melbourne. From the Australian Dictionary of Biography: Thomas Welton Stanford (1832-1918), businessman, spiritualist and philanthropist, was born at Albany, New York State, USA... Drawn to the Australian colonies by rumours of a strong demand for kerosene, in December 1859 Thomas Welton and his brother De Witt sailed for Melbourne... He moved to Clarendon Street, East Melbourne, where he became known for his garden of rare plants, his aviaries of exotic birds, his fine collection of Australian paintings, and, most of all, for his interest in spiritualism. One of the many glass slides purchased from retailers or specifically made for illustrated lectures given by Isaac Selby between c. 1930 and c. 1955 to raise money for the Old Pioneers Memorial Fund. Selby gave a lecture showing "A 100 beautiful nature-coloured views" of 'Old Melbourne and East Melbourne' at the Unitarian Church, Grey St, East Melbourne, on January 29th 1930. Some of the buildings can be identified by the business name shown on the building, for example, the Nicholas Building on Swanston Street, third from the right, top row. To the left of this building is the T&G Building, located on Collins Street. The building on the top left with the short square tower is The Argus Building, built in 1924 and located on the corner of Lonsdale and Elizabeth streets. The church at bottom left is St Joseph's, Stanhope Street, Malvern, opened in 1908. It is not known who the architect was but it has the "Blood and Bandage" style same as the City Baths. The long, light-coloured building with the central tower on the bottom right could be a college, school, barracks or mansion. Prominent buildings on the north side include the Melbourne Coffee Palace (No. 216) and Parer Brothers' Restaurant Cafe (Crystal Cafe) and Hotel (No. 200). Parer Brothers had interests in many hotels over a long period. Immediately to the left of Parer Brothers is Kreitmayer's Waxworks, which at this date offered to the public a combination of wax figures and vaudeville acts, including the advertised 'Professor Davis', a magician. Just five properties down from there was the Theatre Royal. Discernible in the distance are the General Post Office and Drapers Block (alongside the post office), with signage for Robertson & Moffat (later the site for the Myer department store). The Block Arcade, named after the parade and completed in 1893, has its main entrance on the north side of Collins Street. The tall glass windows of the ground floor shops reflect the buildings on the other side of the street. The idea was to see and be seen. The young women in their fashionable outfits, showing off their nipped-in waists and eye-catching bow and fur trims, have caught the attention of the bowler-hatted men passing by. A later photograph of "doing the block" taken around 1915 can be found in Remembering Melbourne: 1850-1960, p. 60.
